I'm very happy to advocate Punit. I work with him (as in 'same
physical office') for several years, and he's a very competent
and diligent fellow. Exactly the sort of person we want as a
debian developer. We are currently co-maintainers of global, and
that how he got into becoming a DD. It was badly maintained and
stuck at an 8-year old version, so he stepped up to help move it
forward. This proved to be much harder than it ought to be due to
a previous maintainer that would neither let go, nor do the work
himself. I helped him work through that over the 2 years or so it took,
eventually via the Technical Comittee. So he's had a baptism of
fire into the ways of Debian, but did an exemplarly job of
remaining polite and helpful throughout, and is now doing a very
good job of maintainership, with old bugs fixed/triaged, new
releases promptly packaged, and relations with upstream much
improved after a decade of tension with the previous maintainer.

I can confirm that he understands the important stuff about Free
Software, is a good engineer, is conscientious, and knows enough
about how Debian machinery and tools work to be a DD. He also has
good advice imediately to hand (me and Steve McIntyre) and is
smart enough to know when to ask before doing.
